A fence project can involve more than choosing a material. Your municipality, fence design, location on the lot, and historic status can affect the approvals needed. Building permits, zoning rules, historic review, and HOA approval are separate questions.
Start with the correct local authority
Confirm which jurisdiction serves your property. Jacksonville and Jacksonville Beach have different processes. Contact the relevant department with your address, proposed height, material, and layout; do not assume a neighbor’s project establishes the requirements for yours.

Check historic-district requirements
If your property is in a locally designated historic district or is a local landmark, ask whether the fence requires a Certificate of Appropriateness (COA). Material, placement, height, and appearance may be reviewed before work starts. Ask which process applies to your specific proposal.

Prepare a useful project checklist
- Property address and a current survey or other reliable boundary information.
- Proposed fence lines, height, materials, and gate locations.
- Existing structures, easements, access needs, and corner visibility.

- Who will handle applications, fees, inspections, and changes requested during review.
